Piers Zvegintzov is an amateur British artist living in Virton. He paints watercolour in the English tradition. He prefers to paint outdoors, to encourage a direct emotional response to the scene. He studied fine art at school and design at universty in the 1980s, but didn't begin to paint seriously until the pandemic in 2020.
Piers concentrates on the Gaumais landscapes, towns and villages. He is inspired by the gentle valleys and hedgerows of this lovely region, the buttery stone of the cottages, the slate spires of the churches, ancient apple trees heavy with mistletoe, and the herds of Limousin cattle in sunny pastures.
He cites Nestor Outer, John Singer Sargent, JMW Turner, Edward Seago and Arthur Melville as important influences, and owes much to contemporary watercolour tutors Gary Tucker, Tim Wilmot, Alvaro Castagnet, Joseph Zbukvic and Amanda Hyatt.
He recently left Scotland and moved to Virton with his family. His work as a risk consultant takes him all over the world, and he always carries his sketch book and watercolour brushes with him. You can follow him in his travels in Africa and Asia via his instagram and facebook accounts "A Global Sketchbook".
